This is a student testimony about Mathematics
While growing up I hate Mathematics but not all the topics there. I like simple topics like charts, Statistics, etc, lol.
How on earth do u expect me to locate or find X and Y when I am not a Police officer or Vigilante? All these find, locate, what is the bearing, etc bring out goose pimples in me during promotional examinations. When the time came then to write WAEC, I have to spend extra time/days studying hard with mathematics geniuses in my class, and my mathematics teachers (I mean all my mathematics teachers from Junior classes to Senior classes.) I even visited some transferred mathematics teachers in their respective schools.
Here is another student’s testimony
It is the Nigerian style of delivery that makes people fail math. You don’t force children to cram, when u do it leads to them despising the whole subject. I excelled in math in primary school, because we had practical applications. my mother allowed me to count money in the market, make sense of the change, etc. By the time the further math teacher came around with a cane in hand, half of us were just copying each other. and making C grades in math.
I got to a university in America, and I ended up in remedial math- the 2nd lowest level of math. To cut a long story short, I was taught by good people who demonstrated the applicability of math in our everyday lives. I now have a BS in Applied math & stats, and I am doing an MS in applied math. If u ask me a basic theory, I probably cannot tell u verbatim, but I will express it how I understand.
That’s a result of a difference in teaching styles.
From the testimonies above, we will deduce that MATHEMATICS the scary subject from the general view is not scary as it is.
What needs to be done to love Mathematics and make it look simple
Engaging students in interactive activities may assist them in comprehending the basic notions smoothly. It helps them grasp the subject from the root, thus understanding its logic. These activities let the teachers examine students’ capability, quality of learning, and knowledge. Therefore a blend of activity and knowledge can advocate forming definitive guidance for Math activities filled with fun and have several benefits; here are some crucial value additions:

- Overcoming Fear: Math activities help students to practice and talk more about their doubts. These activities allow children to work on their level and understand the subject more precisely by interacting with each other. It boosts students’ skills and helps remove their fear, and increases their self-confidence.
- Boosting Fluency: Fun and engaging activities help understand the concepts of the subject and make students fluent in remembering formulas and equations. It helps in improving their learning and memorizing power.
- Improves Communication: High schoolers engaged in math challenges and games create a social environment around them. It allows them to work together as a group and help each other. It makes math more enjoyable and improves their communication skills as well.
- Strategic Thinking: Math games and challenges give students an opportunity to think strategically and sometimes out of the box. While performing such activities, students learn about the rules and concepts of the subject but improve when they find different strategies for solving problems.
